I am concerned my child has not acquired enough words. What are the speech milestones?
There are many things to consider when looking at speech milestones, but when talking specifically about how many words your child should have, use the following guidelines. By 12 months, your child should produce 1-2 words. By 18 months, most children say 50-100 words, but should have a bare minimum of 10. By 24 months, your toddler should have 100-200 words (or more), but at the very least 50. At 24 months, children should also use 2-3 word phrases, such as "want more" and "mama juice please." For more information, look at "Early Intervention" on the "Services" page and/or call me for a free phone consultation.
Our toddler isn’t talking yet. Should we just “wait and see”?
The “wait and see” approach is not recommended. Research shows that early intervention is essential to preventing further language delays and assisting with communication growth.
What ages do you work with?
We work with children of all ages, from infants and toddlers to school-aged kids and teenagers. Our therapy is tailored to meet each child’s unique needs at every stage of their development.
Do I need a referal from my doctor?
No, one is not required at Nunes Speech Therapy. However, insurance companies do require a referral from your doctor if you plan to submit a claim to your insurance.
Do you take insurance?
No, all services are private pay only. This allows me to provide the highest quality care without the restrictions imposed by insurance, such as a need for a doctor’s referral (no doctor’s referral is required at Nunes Speech Therapy) and limits on frequency, type, and duration of services. Superbills are available to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement for out-of-network services. It is strongly recommended that you check with your insurance company to determine what out-of-network speech services are included in your plan.
Can my child receive SLP therapy both privately and through the school district?
Yes, children can receive services privately in addition to school services. Nunes Speech Therapy can also provide treatment for children who could benefit from speech services but do not meet the strict eligibility criteria for school services.
How often and how long are sessions?
Sessions are usually 1-3 times per week for 45-60 minutes depending on your child’s specific needs. The overall treatment time (how many months) depends on your child’s individual needs, as identified during the evaluation and outlined in their treatment plan. This can vary greatly from one child to another.
How often does my child need to be re-evaluated?
We will re-evaluate your child once a year to monitor progress and adjust the treatment plan and goals as needed.
